Not Business As Usual

Former Republican Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee waxed ecstatic about Sarah Palin at tonight's first night of the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In his speech on the convention floor, Thompson praised Palin because she hails from a "small town" and supports "small town values."

In his long-winded speech, he blurted:

[Palin] is from a small town, with small town values, but that's not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family.

Then he said the following:

Some Washington pundits and media big shots are in a frenzy over the selection of a woman who has actually governed rather than just talked a good game on the Sunday talk shows and hit the Washington cocktail circuit. Well, give me a tough Alaskan governor who has taken on the political establishment in the largest state in the union -- and won -- over the beltway business-as-usual crowd any day of the week.

Really? Isn't she the same governor who:

  • Opposes abortions, even if a raped mother seeks to abort her unborn child simply

  • Opposes the legalization of marijuana, even for medicinal purposes (she tried it once but hated it)

  • Supports creationism in the public schools and claims that she won't use a religious litmus test on political candidates running for the school board

  • Refuses to marketize the ferry system after she correctly and courageously wouldn't provide state funds to complete the outrageous not-so-completed Bridge to Nowhere in her home state of Alaska

  • Went after the oil companies by slapping a windfall profits tax on them (not a conservative position by any stretch of the imagination)

  • And

  • Wanted to dole out $100-a-month tax-supported energy debit cards for customers who were overcharged by the energy companies

Watch the following video about Thompson's comments, and you'll see what I mean:
